The Mystery US Senate Candidate

So..who is the mystery Democrat that is allegedly considering running against Chuck Grassley for the US Senate?

We now know that it is not Bruce Braley…

And it is not Barry Griswell…

But the Democrats that continue to stop by the Saloon swear that they have a candidate…

The candidate will be known in a month or so…

And the candidate will have a name and money…

About the only name that gets thrown around here in the Saloon is Fred Hubbell…

If you don’t know Hubbell…

He is part of the Iowa-Hubbell dynasty..

Filthy rich…

And has worked around the globe in the insurance and financial services industry…

He is an early retiree…

Moved back to Iowa and is close to Culver…

In fact..Culver appointed him to Chair the Iowa Power Fund…

And even appointed his wife to Chair the Environmental Protection Commission…

Which..interestingly…if he is a candidate…his Chairmanship of the Power Fund might be one of the few things that Grassley could even attack him on…

A recruit like Hubbell is good for Democrats…

Someone with some nominal name ID…

And deep personal pockets…

But pits a rich, elitist Democrat vs. populist Republican…

Interesting matchup….sure to guarantee more Grassley lawnmower ads…

Culver probably should be hoping that Hubbell doesn’t do this however…

There is not a lot of individual money in the Democratic Party to raise..

And a candidate like Hubbell will suck up a good amount from the same people Culver will want to hit…

And Culver is down 20 points…

Will Hubbell be down 20 points too?

Or will Hubbell…as a non-incumbent be in better shape than Culver….

Only time will tell…

I would think Culver would want a strong candidate against Grassley at the top of the ticket. I don’t think that would make a big difference for his fundraising. Branstad entering the race would probably have a much bigger impact on Culver’s fundraising.

I like the idea of Hubbell much more than Griswell.

Hubbell will raise good money and force Grassley and national Republicans to unload here like they otherwise wouldn’t have.

Well keep dreamin Wilbur…Hubbell has announced that he’s not going to be a candidate..The Dems still dont have a top name candidate recruited to take on Grassley…just a couple of asshats….
